Bathroom Renovation

When we are thinking about planning a bathroom renovation, our first consideration is the layout. Whether installing a new bathroom in an extension, remodeling an existing room, or replacing bathroom sanitaryware, all these tasks need to be planned, and the layout should be prepared to suit all the exact requirements of the homeowner.

The most important parts of bathroom renovation are plumbing and electrics. The plumbing in the bathroom needs to perform two functions: providing a water supply and taking away waste. The pipework should be checked by a plumber before starting the bathroom renovation to decide whether it is worth saving the existing pipework or starting again (re-routing pipework if required).

The electrics is another important aspect to be considered in advance during a bathroom renovation. It’s necessary to have a layout of the desired bathroom with the position of windows, doors, toilet, bath, shower enclosure, sink, and storage elements, whether built-in or free-standing. All structural features such as sloped ceilings, bulkheads, alcoves, and columns should be noted in the layout. The installation of additional devices such as electrical fans, heated towel rails, sockets, and lighting should be considered at the preparation stage of the bathroom renovation.

If it’s the renovation of an existing bathroom, there’s normally no need for building regulations. If it’s an extension or creating a new bathroom, it’s very important that all work is done by a qualified and experienced bathroom fitter to ensure that new pipework and electrics follow building regulations.

A new bathroom needs to be aesthetically pleasing and practical. The materials and finishes for bathroom renovation need to be water-resistant or waterproof, and the electrical supply needs to be placed in protected zones away from direct water spray.

Choosing a heating system requires careful consideration and planning, as there are a few options for heating systems in the bathroom, each requiring a different approach, water, and electricity supply for installation. Here are several options for heating a bathroom:

  • Radiator (the cheapest and simplest option)
  • Underfloor heating – a very popular and comfortable choice for cold and wet places such as bathrooms
  • Heated towel rails – a common and useful option for bathrooms if there is enough space to fit them
